"Steve Hutton is one of the brightest, sharpest minds we have in SEANC.  I have not found anyone else in SEANC with his depth of knowledge on Collective Bargaining and his understanding of labor issues.

Steve's quiet demeanor and his ability to listen to our problems  marks him as an outstanding leader.  Over the years, I have sought  his wise counsel, and he is always willing to help.  Those of us who have worked with Steve know that when he decides to lend himself to a cause, he leaves no stone unturned to secure  fairness and justice for workers who are mistreated in the workplace.

At such a time as this, Steve is the kind of person we need in SEANC's top leadership."

Dr. Jerry Jailall, District 44

I was involved in a RIF (reduction in force) from UNC-TV in April 2008.  Because I knew this was wrong I decided to file a grievance but realized I knew nothing about the process or my rights.  I contacted Steve Hutton to ask for his help. Steve did not hesitate and we started having meetings to plan for my hearings. Steve was always positive and made himself available by email, home and office phone and in person meetings. I was not successful with my first two hearings and finally was able to take my case to OAH (office of administrate hearings).  I was overwhelmed by all of the legal papers and documents needed to be filed with the court.  Again Steve was helping me and encouraging me all along the way. Were it not for Steve's help, I would not have been able to go through all of the steps necessary to fight for my rights. Steve gave of his time to be present at my final hearing and offer his advice and encouragement. My case is still pending and I realize that I never would have been able to do this without Steve's help. Thank you Steve!  R. Brent Judd

I have worked with Steve Hutton since 1997 on the campaign to win collective bargaining rights for public employees.  His methodical approach to winning legal and political challenges, combined with his tireless advocacy for state employees, makes him one of the most important allies in this campaign.  I have also had the opportunity to work with Steve in his role as grievance assistant, advocate for Jackie Maynard and Sharon House, the former UNC dental technicians who are challenging UNC's violation of its layoff policy, which resulted in termination of their employment in 2007 after more than 27 years each of service to the state.  Steve's insight and legal research in Jackie and Sharon's case, as well as his calm and unwavering sense of justice, have helped to guide us through a protracted struggle-- one which has yet to end.  One thing we are sure of: when the dust settles, Steve Hutton will still be standing as an advocate for justice for state employees.     Elizabeth Haddix, Attorney at Law

I have known Steve Hutton for approximately five years.  I first met him in connection with a grievance I filed against the UNC-CH School of Law.  The grievance dealt with an attempt by a bad new hire to assign his responsibilities to me without a commensurate review of the position.  Upon complaining, I experienced a campaign of retaliation by this supervisor.  Steve expertly led me through the grievance process, sacrificing his time to meet with me whenever necessary and attending numerous meetings and hearings.  I was able to prevail in the grievance process by obtaining a finding of retaliation against my supervisor (although the Chancellor overturned the decision).  I would have been unable to complete this lengthy and complicated process without his help.  I would strongly recommend Steve Hutton for any position with SEANC that would utilize his talents to fight for NC state employees’ rights.     Frank Bermel

Steve Hutton is a man who gives and gives to help his fellow employees.  I know this on a personal level because he worked (and continues to work) with myself and Jackie Maynard.  We are two 26+ year state employees laid off by UNC in 2007, along with several others as the School of Dentistry chose to outsource our work, with no cost savings realized to the university. The failure of UNC to follow its own reduction in force policies resulted in changing our lives forever---taking a personal and financial toll that one cannot ever fully recover from.  I cannot imagine going through such a previously unimaginable journey alone.  Steve was there from the start, being supportive as we explored our options.  He inspired others outside of the university to join the fight with his valid arguments. From marching in protest with us, to sitting in the courtroom, Steve seemingly spent every minute he could spare steadily working on our behalf (and in turn all state employees).  With his quiet yet effective manner, Steve has worked tirelessly to prevent this wrong from happening to other state employees in the future. He has proven he is an effective advocate for all state employees through his tireless work and unyielding push for workers’ rights in North Carolina.     Sharon House

I met the “Honorable Steve Hutton” approximately twelve years ago and it is indeed an honor to inscribe my message on the qualities and virtues of this man!!  My name is Martha Barbour; I have served as a Manager in the UNC School of Dentistry for thirty four years.  Therefore, I feel competent to speak to the qualities of Steve and expound on the “Whys” he should be elected to the SEANC Second Vice President’s seat.

I cannot believe the thousands of peoples’ lives he has touched.  It has been a privilege to know and work with him on the many serious SPA staff issues the UNC School of Dentistry has faced during the past twelve years.  It has been our conversations, game plans, marches on the South Building, charity, life, and just listening to me when I was so distressed for the Dental School staff.  Over the years, Steve has just stood out, never concerned with his own interests and needs but always demonstrating the importance of others.  When ideas of self-indulgence and egotism creep into my thoughts, I use Steve Hutton, as a gauge to find my way back to tolerance, kindness and understanding.

Steve has always been a willing and enthusiastic participant in the State Employees Association of North Carolina.   He has been pivotal in making the climate much better for staff in the Dental School.  His efforts and words were the encouragement I needed to move forward in the effort to make necessary changes in the School of Dentistry.  He has participated broadly in support of all university staff, not just those in the Dental School.  He has always been an outstanding mentor to staff and to many faculty as well.

Steve is recognized by his peers on this campus as being among the top staff advocates in the State of North Carolina.  He is acknowledged as an innovative and productive staff member, one who is well prepared, conscientious, hard working, creative, “technically” outstanding, and as a result, the one person who will always remain at the very top of my list as the very best colleague I have ever worked with where staff had to be represented.   Steve Hutton is a role model for the UNC staff and I enthusiastically endorse his run for the SEANC Second Vice President.

Respectfully submitted,
Martha B. Barbour

University Administrative Manager,
Department of Dental Ecology, UNC School of Dentistry
